The "Dream Job" Reading Toolkit: Strategy #2 — Mix It Up (But Don't Forget the Classics!)

Last week, we talked about Reading to Learn—how students are using books as "toolboxes" to build their future careers. Today, we’re sharing a secret to keeping that momentum going through the holidays: The Power of the Mix!

It is so tempting to always hunt for the newest books under the tree, but don't retire those beloved, dog-eared stories just yet!

New Books = New Knowledge

Expanding your child’s library is like giving them a map to the whole world. A brand-new book about skyscrapers or bridges might be the spark that turns your student into a future Gator Architect! Every new story broadens their vocabulary and helps them dream bigger about their own "Dream Job."

Old Books = Reading Smoothly

Does your scholar want to read that same Christmas story for the 5th night in a row? Let them! Rereading a favorite story builds Fluency—the ability to read smoothly and with great expression. This confidence is a "superpower" that makes tackling harder texts (like future college textbooks!) much easier down the road.

The Grandparent Connection

Grandparents are the ultimate partners for "Classic Story Time"! This week, ask a grandparent to read a favorite book from their childhood to your Little Scholar. Whether it's a timeless holiday classic or a story they've loved for decades, it’s a wonderful way to build memories and reading skills at the same time.

Coming Next Week: Decode Like a Gator Detective!

Get your magnifying glasses ready! Next week, we’ll show you how to hunt for clues on the page to solve the mystery of tough new words.
